Safety

The Nissan Sentra has standard driver and front passenger side knee airbags mounted low on the dashboard. These airbags help prevent the driver and front passenger from sliding under their seatbelts or the main frontal airbags; this keeps them better positioned during a collision for maximum protection. Knee airbags also help keep the legs from striking the dashboard, preventing knee and leg injuries in the case of a serious frontal collision. The K4 doesn’t offer knee airbags.

The Sentra has a standard blind spot warning system that uses sensors to alert the driver to objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them and moves the vehicle back into its lane. A system to reveal vehicles in the K4’s blind spot costs extra.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the Sentra has standard Rear Cross Traffic Alert, helping the driver avoid collisions. Only the K4 LXS/EX/GT-Line offers Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning.

Both the Sentra and the K4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

Warranty

The Sentra’s 5 year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the K4 runs out after 100,000 miles.

There are over 34 percent more Nissan dealers than there are Kia dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the Sentra’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than Kia vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan second in initial quality, above the industry average. With 12 more problems per 100 vehicles, Kia is ranked 8th.

Engine

The Sentra’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder produces 2 more horsepower (149 vs. 147) and 14 lbs.-ft. more torque (146 vs. 132) than the K4’s standard 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Sentra gets better mileage than the K4 Sedan:

MPG

Sentra

S/SV 2.0 DOHC 4-cyl.

29 city/38 hwy

SR/SL 2.0 DOHC 4-cyl.

28 city/36 hwy

K4 Sedan

1.6 turbo 4-cyl.

26 city/33 hwy

On the EPA test cycle the Sentra gets better mileage than the K4 Hatchback:

MPG

Sentra

S/SV 2.0 DOHC 4-cyl.

29 city/38 hwy

SR/SL 2.0 DOHC 4-cyl.

28 city/36 hwy

K4 Hatchback

2.0 DOHC 4-cyl.

28 city/34 hwy

1.6 turbo 4-cyl.

26 city/33 hwy

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Sentra’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. If the conditions warrant or the driver wishes, the system can be manually disabled at any time for the duration of a trip. The K4 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

Tires and Wheels

The Sentra has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The K4 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

For superior ride and handling, the Nissan Sentra has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The K4 has a rear torsion beam axle, with a semi-independent rear suspension.

The Sentra has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Sentra flat and controlled during cornering. The K4 base model’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

Passenger Space

The Sentra has 1.7 inches more front legroom and 1.1 inches more rear hip room than the K4 Sedan.

Cargo Capacity

The Sentra’s standard folding rear seats are split to accommodate bulky cargo. The K4’s standard single piece folding rear seat is not as flexible; long cargo and a passenger can’t share the rear seat.

Ergonomics

The Sentra’s speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The K4’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Recommendations

The Nissan Sentra outsold the Kia K4 by 9% during 2025.
